James Lawrence Elder, age 96, of Georgetown, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025. A faithful servant of God, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and proud veteran, James leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Born on June 28, 1929, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Joseph and Catherine Elder, James was one of thirteen children in a large and loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wife, his sons, James Elder Jr, Christopher A Elder, one grandchild Thomas Elder, and nine siblings.
James was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Bradford, Indiana. His daily Rosaries were a cornerstone of his spiritual life, bringing him strength, peace, and purpose. His faith deeply influenced every aspect of his life and was reflected in his gentle spirit and servant’s heart.
On June 20, 1953, he married the love of his life, Mary Jo Snyder. Together, they shared 64 beautiful years of marriage, building a home filled with laughter, love, and faith. James and Mary Jo raised a large and devoted family, and James found his greatest joy in his role as “Grandpa.” To his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless others, he was a source of wisdom, warmth, and unconditional love.
James proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later worked as a Pipe Fitter before retiring as a Maintenance Supervisor from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company. Even in retirement, James never slowed down-his days were filled with caring for his home and property, tending to his beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, mowing his lawn with pride, and crafting his well-loved homemade wine.
He was a natural nurturer, always ready to lend a hand, share a meal, or welcome a new face. His hands were rarely still, always busy serving others or caring for the land he loved.
He is survived by his children: Janet Elder-Lauer, Susan (Keith) Elder-Deaton, Timothy (Shari) J. Elder, Mark (Nancy) S. Elder, Kenneth (Gerri) B. Elder, and Richard M. Elder; his brother Larry Elder; sisters Carolyn Elder and Barbara (Tony) Cox; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Bradford, IN, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a Rosary service at 7:30 PM.
