Delmond Ray Byerly, age 99, of Palmyra, IN, passed away peacefully at Harrison Springs Health Campus in Corydon, IN, on April 5, 2025. Ray was born on May 26, 1925, to Harry and Erma (Henriott) Byerly in Milltown, IN.
A proud United States Navy veteran, Ray served his country during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. After his military service, Ray worked as a Diesel Mechanic for Kentucky Machinery, Inc., in Louisville, KY, where he retired after 38 years of service.
On August 11, 1950, Ray married the love of his life, Helen Fay (Crane) Byerly, and together they built a life in Palmyra, IN, where Ray remained a dedicated member of the community. He was a member of the Palmyra Church of Christ, where he was baptized at 98 years old. Ray was also a member of the VFW Post 1693 in New Albany, IN.
Ray was a man of many passions. He found great joy in working on older model tractors, farming, tending to his vegetable garden, and cutting wood. But above all, Ray cherished his time spent with his family and friends. His gentle spirit and steadfast love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Erma Byerly; his beloved wife, Helen Fay Byerly; three sisters, Bessie Louise Osmola, Opal Marie Sears, and Carol Ann Byerly; and six brothers, William Lester Byerly, Marion Lewis Byerly, Donald Richard Byerly, John Franklin Byerly, Marion Gene Byerly, and Forrest Byerly.
He is survived by his son, Garry Allen (Sharon) Byerly; his daughters, Juanita (Jerry) Love and Vivian Byerly; his sister, June Katheryn Miller; his brother, Cecil Vern (Marilyn) Byerly; his grandchildren, Kelly Revard, Keith (Angel) Byerly, Daniel (Jacquelyn) Love, and Derek (Nicole) Love; as well as nine great-grandchildren who brought him so much joy.
Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday April 10, 2025, and again from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday April 11, 2025 at Love Funeral Home in Palmyra, IN. Funeral services will be held on Friday April 11, 2025 at 1:00 PM, at Love Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Palmyra Cemetery.
The family of Ray would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers who provided exceptional care during his time of need, including Wanda Patton, Connie Halas, Peggy Davis, and Myra Happel. A special thank you also goes to the dedicated staff at Harrison Springs Health Campus and Southern Care Hospice for their compassionate support. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ray’s memory to the Palmyra Cemetery, or that you consider donating blood at your local blood drive in honor of Ray, who was a generous and frequent blood donor. Alternatively, donations may be made to a veterans charity of your choice. Your kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated.
Let us remember the life of a man who was dedicated to his family, his country, and his community. Ray's legacy of kindness, hard work, and love will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
